Dr Donald G Fry, AO

Don Fry, AOWe are honoured to have Dr Don Fry AO as our Patron. Dr Fry, a born and bred local to Cairns, is probably best known as owner and Chairman of AIMTEK Pty Ltd (trading as NQEA), a large engineering firm based in Cairns. AIMTEK Pty Ltd has built 220 ships and watercraft over the last 30 years, including 59 ships for the Australian Defence Forces. A major local employer, AIMTEK Pty Ltd has also trained 1000 apprentices and provided over 40 million hours of direct employment in this region.

Dr Fry's outstanding accomplishments in his field have been recognised with appointment as an Officer of the Order of Australia, and with the Institution of Engineers highest National Award, he is an inaugural inductee into the Queensland Engineering Hall of Fame, was inducted into the QUT Hall of Fame for Outstanding Constructors, is an Adjunct Professor in University of Queensland's School of Engineering and was recently presented with an Honorary Doctorate of Engineering by James Cook University in recognition of his exemplary contributions to engineering.

Besides his business and scientific interests, Don Fry chairs the National Committee advising the Federal Government on homelessness. He is also the chair of the JCU Engineering Advisory Board and a member of the Cairns Salvation Army Advisory Board.

Who are we here for?

FNQILSA can provide support to people with a disability:

  • Who have on-going or temporary support hours funded by the State Government or by another organisation;
  • Or who can pay for their own support; and
  • Who live in Far North Queensland or are visiting the region.

What services can FNQILSA provide?

FNQILSA is funded by the State Government through Department of Community - Disability Services to provide lifestyle support. We also:

  • Assist people with disabilities in the community through our Mobile Attendant Care Program (Dusk 2 Dawn);
  • Assit people with mental illness to live independently in their own homes, through the housing and support program (HASP) funded by Queensland health;
  • Assist to access temporary support funding avenues for emergency, unusual or respite situations.
